18th May 2023
Yesterday HMRC announced the closure of their VAT registration helpline, which is dedicated specifically to assisting customers who have concerns around their VAT application. From Monday 22 May 2023, advisers will be redeployed to spend their time processing applications instead of answering calls.
HMRC justified the closure by saying that over 85% of calls received are from taxpayers seeking an update on the progress of their VAT registration. Instead, they are advising taxpayers to use “Where‘s my reply” tool to get an estimated response date. HMRC state that taxpayers can expect a reply within 40 working days and those submitted within the period should not contact the tax department. If a reply has not been received within the 40-day timeframe an email enquiry will need to be sent to vrs.newregistrations@hmrc.gov.uk where a response can be expected within five working days.
How THL can help
THL can take the administration burden from you, allowing you to focus your time elsewhere. The team can complete the application on your behalf ensuring all the relevant data is included to avoid delays and errors. We can also consult with HMRC on your behalf chasing the application and resolving any queries that may arise.
